The collection includes management files that reflect the conception and construction of the Lockefield Garden Apartments (Indianapolis, Ind.). Correspondence includes letters exchanged between housing manager Lionel F. Artis and representatives of the United States Federal Housing Authority concerning management of the project. Other items include daily statements of operation (1946-1954) and copies of the Federal Housing Authority Bulletin (1942-1944). The collection also includes a three-dimensional model of the project.

The Lockefield Garden Apartments (Indianapolis, Ind.) were built between 1935 and 1937 as a federal Public Works Administration project. The apartments were segregated, located on twenty-two acres bound by Indiana Avenue, and Blake, North, and Locke streets. The N.P. Lionel F. Artis (1895-1971) was born in Paris, Illinois and moved to Indianapolis as a child. He served in the army during World War I. He attended Butler University, the University of Chicago, and Indiana University. A civic leader in Indianapolis, Artis served on the board of directors of 23 organizatations.
